Whisky Mash: GlenWyvis
Established in 2015, GlenWyvis holds claim to being Scotland’s first community-owned distillery, and even more impressively is the first to be powered by 100% renewable energy; powered by its own wind turbine, hydro scheme, solar panels and biomass boiler, operating completely off-grid!
The brainchild of army veteran turned commercial helicopter pilot, John McKenzie, GlenWyvis takes its name from two lost distilleries in the area, Ben Wyvis and Glenskiach, and has been intended to help breathe life back into the rural Dingwall community, which has proven to be a resounding success with the distillery massively exceeding its crowdfunding target, raising £2.6 million in just 77 days!
With their 2018 vintage having reached optimum maturity for release, we are now starting to see the distillery’s delightful Highland character come to life in an impressive fashion.
